A New Approach To Biomechanics: Orthotic Selection by Foot-Type: From Ages 1-101

 When: Saturday 31 Ocotber

Presenter: Kylie Pearce B.Sc(Pod), C.Ped

Earn 2 hours of CPD under the Podiatry Board of Australia’s Category 2: Further Education

This 2 hour seminar will provide the attendee an over-view of normal and pathological foot biomechanics, an introduction to a simple, inexpensive method of video gait analysis and a common sense approach to foot orthotic selection and design.  It will include reviewing the normal development of a child’s foot, as well as Developmental Flat Foot and torsional deformities in children.

6 major adult foot-types will be presented with their typical clinical conditions and how each foot-type may correlate specific rehabilitation goals. Format will include lecture utilizing a power point presentation and gait videos.

  • Review of the Paediatric Foot Development and Clinical Conditions
  • Foot Biomechanics Review
  • Rearfoot Deformities: Compensated vs Uncompensated
  • Forefoot Deformities: Varus and Valgus
  • Simple Video Gait analysis
  • Clinical Conditions by Foot Type
  • Orthotic Selection Process and Prescription

At the completion of this presentation: (Learning Outcomes)

  • The attendee will be able to differentiate between a compensated and uncompensated rearfoot varus deformity and their effect on gait.
  • The attendee will demonstrate the ability to recognize the affect forefoot varus and valgus deformities have upon gait.
  • The attendee will demonstrate the ability to differentiate between common pathological foot-types.
  • The attendee will demonstrate the ability to recognize key weight-bearing compensations specific to rearfoot and forefoot deformities.
  • The attendee will gain the ability to select the appropriate orthotic design and selection based on pathological foot-type.
  • The attendee will gain a better understanding of the development of the pediatric foot and conditions that can arise, such as Developmental Flat Foot and Torsional Deformities in children.
